Her father, Stephen, was originally from Liverpool, and her mother, Nano (née Booth), a college lecturer, came from Llandeilo in West Wales. Her great-grandfather emigrated from Ireland.
Mulligan has one sibling; an elder brother.  At the age of 3, she moved with her family from England to Germany after her father accepted the job of managing the European arm of Intercontinental Hotels. Due to her father's job, her family lived in expensive hotels for 8 years. She was "quite shy" during her childhood and a tomboy until the age of 15. She was also "quite straight-laced" and very academic until age 14, having then become more interested in acting.

Mulligan dated Money Never Sleeps co-star Shia LaBeouf from August 2009 to October 2010,  after being introduced to each other by the movie's director, Oliver Stone. "You could see their chemistry right away, and it was pretty powerful. They were completely professional on the set, but there was no mistaking what was happening," recalled Stone. Neither star discussed their relationship with the media, although photos of the couple being affectionate regularly surfaced in the tabloids. She is now dating Mumford & Sons lead singer Marcus Mumford.

Career
Carey Hannah Mulligan is an English actress. She made her film debut as Kitty Bennet in Pride & Prejudice (2005) and the 2005 BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel "Bleak House" (2005). She currently resides in Covent Garden, England.

Following Pride & Prejudice, she had roles in numerous British programs and, in 2007, made her Broadway debut in The Seagull to critical acclaim. In 2009, she gained widespread recognition for playing the lead role of Jenny in An Education, winning a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Additionally, Mulligan was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award for her performance. Following her breakthrough role as Jenny, she appeared in the dramatic films The Greatest and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, as well as Never Let Me Go, all in 2010.

She got her first major appearance by playing "Kitty Bennet" in Pride & Prejudice (2005) alongside Keira Knightley, Judi Dench and Donald Sutherland. Carey also played orphan "Ada Clare" in the BBC television series, "Bleak House" (2005).

Carey has said that her passion and love for acting was first kindled at her old school Woldingham School, where she took part in a school production of "Sweet Charity" in her final year, and where she was also a student head of drama.

As a relative newcomer, British actress Carey Mulligan took Hollywood by storm as the sublimely exuberant Jenny in the feature film, "An Education" (2009). The incandescent actress gave a seemingly effortless portrayal of a young girl who falls for a charming, more experienced man in the film that made her a bona fide movie star and, according to critics, a strong contender for an Oscar nomination. The fresh-faced ingénue was suddenly flooded with plum movie roles that billed her opposite established actors like Michael Douglas in "Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps" (2010) and Keira Knightley in "Never Let Me Go" (2010). Mulligan was also romantically linked to A-list actor, Shia LaBeouf, so with that came the inevitable tabloid interest in her as well. While it was a coming-of-age film that kicked Mulligan's career into high gear, it was the actress' penetrating performances both on the big screen and on Broadway that cemented her place as a serious actress worthy of being called "the next Audrey Hepburn."
