Life and career
Nicola Roberts was born and raised in Runcorn, Cheshire. She has one sister, Frankie, and two brothers, Harrison and Clayton. Roberts says that she holds family values close to her heart and tries to visit often in order to stay close (as seen in Girls Aloud: Off the Record and The Passions of Girls Aloud). Roberts started her career singing with a girl group at her local discotheque with a local DJ. The group performed under the name 'The 5 Musketers', which was later reported to have been a name suggestion in the early stages of 'Girls Aloud's development. She also attended Olwen Grounds school of Dance, where she sang solos to small audiences in the Queens Hall in Widnes, Cheshire. Roberts dated her childhood boyfriend Carl Egerton until their split in 2006.

In 2002, Nicola Roberts auditioned for the ITV1 reality television programme Popstars: The Rivals, the second British series of the international Popstars franchise. The series' goal was to create two winning pop groups - a boy band and a girl group, each consisting of five members who would then partake in "a battle of the sexes" as they vie for the Christmas number one on the UK Singles Chart.  Several thousand applicants attended auditions across the UK in hope of being selected. In the end, ten girls and ten boys were chosen as finalists by judges Louis Walsh, Pete Waterman, and Geri Halliwell. These finalists then took to the stage, participating in weekly Saturday night live performances (alternating weekly between the girls and boys). Roberts did not initially make the final ten; she was chosen to replace Nicola Ward, who decided to quit.

NICOLA ROBERTS has finally got rid of her fella Carl Davies.

According to reports the decision was made after months of begging from her mates.
It now means the 22-year-old babe is free to concentrate fully on GIRLS ALOUD's sell-out Tangled Up tour.

A source revealed: "It's all very upsetting for poor Nicola but she'd be the first to admit things haven't been great between her and Carl for a while.

"Their relationship has always been feisty but recently the rows were explosive.
"There have been lots of tearful late-night phone calls and now she's decided to call time on it all. The strain of touring has taken its toll and Nicola's made up her mind it's over."

The couple's relationship has been rather torrid from the beginning.
In March last year, just 12 weeks after they got together, the pair had a slanging match at the NME Awards.

Carl, described as an "entrepreneur" from Nicola's home town of Runcorn, near Liverpool, got fed up with fans pestering her for autographs and announced he wanted to leave.
A mole said: "When Nicola refused to go, Carl stormed out, barging into her on the way and sending her flying into a guest.

"They seemed to have patched things up but were soon rowing again at the afterparty. It was embarrassing to watch."
And they were soon at it again last May when the supposedly happy couple were again grappling, this time in the VIP area of Liverpool celeb haunt Mosquito.

An eyewitness said: "It was a really nasty row.
"They began the night all huddled up in a corner of the VIP section, snogging each others' faces off.
"Then they began rowing and it really kicked off.
"They were pushing, pulling and shoving each other and she was in floods of tears."
Finally, last November, Nicola moved out of the home she shares with Carl after he left her sobbing minutes before taking the stage for a show at a G.A.Y. night at London's Astoria.

This time Carl forced his way into the girls' dressing room and launched into a jealous tirade in front of her shocked band mates - CHERYL COLE, SARAH HARDING, NADINE COYLE and KIMBERLEY WALSH.

But despite the turbulence, Nicola took Carl back - however, she stated the Girls would always come first.
Nicola said: "Girls Aloud is my life. It's all I've known so I could never leave the band for a man."
Good on her.
